So my Thing a Day challenge failed miserably. I unfortunately got sick in the middle of doing it, and was in no way able to make things, nor would I want to give out gifts that were covered in evil germs.

I am not phased by my failure and will re-attempt this another month, hopefully with better results. Until then you'll just have to settle for some plain ol artwork and crafty thing posts.

day 31!!!!! We did it!!! and by we I mean me. This was a somewhat unsuccessful venture, as my drawings started to get worse as the days went on. It also backfired on my plan that doing these drawings might make me better at/more creative with my drawing. Whoops.

My hand is still burned, but I wanted to draw a cute gay couple getting married. Good job New York!

I decided I AM going to do a make-a-thing a day for a month, but I am taking august off, and will be doing that in September. I've just got too much work coming up in August.

I am officially doing a drawing-a-day for the month of july!

I think it’s going to be a fun test for me to schedule my time properly and a great exercise for keeping me in the habit of drawing constantly. Everything from figures, to cartoons and still life.

I’m going to do my best to do them all as physical pieces (aka not digital work) and then I had the idea of selling most of these drawings in my Etsy shop as they are finished each day. For cheap. I am also thinking of taking requests, so feel free to request something in the comments.

I think this will be fun. Also hopefully I will make some new internet friends. I love me some internet friends :3

Resin experiments

Here is a tiny glimpse at my first resin attempts!

I have an easy casting low-odor resin kit, and these specially made molds. I've seen a lot of people make candy-filled pieces, and they were so cute I decided that would be my first attempt. With these I also added a little blue dye, but I think those made them look cloudy. Also I didn't put enough candy in these! I just set in my next attempt, sans the blue dye and with tons more sprinkles. If they come out better I'll try making something cute.

Lego heels! My attempt!

LEGO HEELS!!! If you saw it floating around on the internet, an artist made an adorable pair of lego heels. And I wanted them. So I decided to try and make my own. Now, these aren't completely finished (I ran out of legos T_T) but they are pretty close to done!

I've tried them on and walked around, and the legos are staying on! I think I'm going to take some more glue to carefully insert into the cracks between the legos for extra hold. I imagine that there will be some casualties if I bang my feet into stuff, but they should mostly stay intact. They look SO COOL on. If I wear the rest of my amazing lego accessories too I won't even now what to do with myself. 15 something dollars worth of legos and a 30$ pair of heels (got them as a gift, as I am broke) and all of my lego feet dreams have come true.

Now where does one wear a delightful pair of heels such as this?

HOW TO: Zelda Heart Necklace

I tweeted a little while back about this sweet Zelda Heart necklace that I made. As a fanatical Zelda... fanatic, and a crafty mcCrafterson, I decided I MUST MAKE THIS NECKLACE TO HAVE AND WEAR. Getting some good reactions out of it, I decided to write up a little tutorial on how to make your very own. It's pretty simple, so you should make it and wear it so you can be beautiful.

SUPPLIES:

*InkJet Printer Shinkable plastic sheets (like shrinky dinks)

*Single hole punch

*Scissors

*Necklace chain +clasp

*pliers

*oven of some kind that can be set to 275 degrees F

*baking sheet or equivalent

*Some sort of coating/sealer

*Inkjet printer

*photo editing program

You can buy shrinkable inkjet plastic sheets at most craft stores. For this project I used Shrinky Dink brand plastic, because buying it from the local craft store is convenient and I can use coupons :D I've heard that Dick Blick also sells a different brand of shrinkable plastic that works well for this, so you can experiment with that as well. The shrinky dink stuff costs about 11$ before a coupon, so it's very affordable.

The packs come with 6 sheets that are 8X10. Things to note: Make SURE you are buying the printable brand, it has a special coating on one side especially for inkjet printers. Non-coated plastic is not going to work properly. Also you can NOT USE THESE IN LASER PRINTERS. Laser printers heat up quite a bit when printing, and that will shrink the sheet and possibly break/damage the printer.

The package contains very detailed instructions, only some of which I will mention here, so make sure to read them!

The first step is to get the image you want to have as a necklace. There are several versions of the Zelda hearts, so you can choose your favorite, or even make your own. For myself I found THIS IMAGE (see above) when doing a search. Now this image is actually smaller than it needs to be to make a sizable necklace. Shrinky dink plastic shrinks to about 1/10th the original size of the image, so I put this into photoshop, into a 8x10 document and resized it until it was almost half the size of the page (height). You also have to lighten the image by about 50%. If you don't they will become too dark after baking.

You can also experiment with sizes to see what works for you... my first time I printed several sizes to choose which size I liked best.

*Next: Print them! Remember to print it on the special coated side! You may make mistakes when trying to print, but you have 6 sheets to get it right!
Then cut them out carefully, hole punch where you want the necklace to hang (I recommend putting the holes on the top of each end, it hangs nice and even that way.)
*Place printed side side up on a piece of paper bag on a baking sheet.
*Preheat oven to 275 degrees F
*Cook for 3-5 minutes (watch them while they cook.) You can do this in a toaster oven or conventional oven. No microwaves!
*The pieces might warp a little, so when you take them out of the oven you can gentle press them flat with some paper (or your fingers if you don't mind little burns) You have to do it quickly, as once it cools it will retain it's shape.

Once fully cooled coat with a clear coating. The package reccomends Krylon spray in either matte or Gloss, depending on what you prefer (mine is matte) or clear nailpolish. You may need several coats

Let fully dry before attaching loops and necklace chain.

I love this glitter tote bag idea by Alisa Burke. I didn't even know about glitter transfer sheets until reading her tutorial, and now I can't wait to buy some sheets. As they say, glitter is the herpes of arts and crafts, so being able to put glitter on something without getting sparkles stuck everywhere forever is magic. She also uses a cool craft item called beads in a bottle, which is basically like shiny puffy paint that hardens into a round bead/pearl like shape. I think the combination of the two here really makes a sophisticated looking bag.

She has several different colors, but the blue is definitely my favorite.

Wood painting progress! We recently had a tornado in my state, so this image of a lady tornado have been in my mind. This is acrylic on a wood board. I did the drawing with a watercolor stick so I could wash off the drawing lines if I made a mistake (although composition-ally I think I put the lady in a little low)

This week in "The Basement Life": Puppy Fiacsco

I call it "The Basement Life" because my studio apartment is located in a basement. It's luxurious, I know. It's ok to be jealous.

This week Parker our puppy RAN AWAY!!

Parker (who is an adult dog but still acts like a puppy) is terrified of thunderstorms. At 1:30 am on Friday, he was out taking a piddle in the rain when a loud crash of thunder frightened him so badly that he bolted the fuck under the gate and out into the street. We had no idea which direction he went, and he didn't have his tags on. We spent all night with flashlights running up and down the streets calling for him, driving around calling for him, and generally losing our minds. After three+ hours we gave in for the night, but returned once daylight had set in. Driving around we still couldn't find him, so I made some fliers:

Luckily we found him!! He ran so far out that he almost made it to the Turnpike. Luckily, someone had their door open at the right time as he was running past, and he zoomed right into their house. After their initial shock of thinking some kind of skunk just broke into their home, the family took loving tender care of Parker and reported him found. He is still traumatized from the event, and his little foot pads are all scratched up and tender from running so much, but we are spoiling him with treats and love and he seems happy to be home.

This week I also got my new tablet!!! After debating on whether or not I could afford to spend the 400+$ dollars on a new tablet, I gave in and bought the Wacom Intuos4 Large Pen Tablet. It is the most money I have ever spent on a single item, and it was long overdue. I have never been very fond of doing digital artwork, but that is a stupid way to be for obvious reasons. I realized that this mindset was probably due to the fact that my tools were OLD AS SHIT. I am not kidding you. The tablet I have been using might as well been a computer mouse. See below for the comparison of the old one to the new one!

I know right? Having this tablet has been making me do more mainly digital work, and I am enjoying myself! (Expect to see an annoying influx of photoshop sketches.) Ps.. do not come to my house and try to steal this, I am heavily armed.

Thursday at an after school program for work, the kids had a great time almost getting me fired when they decided to start singing "Hide ya kids, hide ya wife, cause they raping everybody in here." (These kids are ten.) I told them that they shouldn't sing that stuff at school, in which one of the more troublesome kids decided to yell: "Shouldn't say what?? RAPE???" (they all thought this was hilarious, but stopped when I told them that they were going to get us all in trouble.) It was pretty funny though

And as always I am DRAWING LOTS OF THINGS which will get posted around here and on the twitters. Also I need to set up my tumblr because I feel that things get shared more easily there. But I will probably just repost the same stuff. And maybe some pictures of cats.

So here's the first one! It was pretty fun, and the 1st finished illustration done with my new version of Photoshop.

23rd birthday!

My 23rd birthday was on may the ninth of this year, and I had a lovely magical time.

I really like celebrating... holidays and birthdays are things I really look forward to. That is why every year I try to squeeze as much birthday activity as I possibly can.

This year I really wanted to get the newest versions of photoshop and illustrator as a graduation gift, as I can get the student price before I graduate (300$ for Creative suite package), and I have been using very old (illegal) versions. But I was super lucky because my parents actually bought this for me as a birthday gift, and still have some kind of graduation gift in mind! It is pretty exciting, as this will probably be the most lavish gift I will get from them.... until I get married or something. They are already up and running on my computer, and I am over the moon. Now I just have to work forever to get up to speed on how to use them properly.

We had the family party on sunday, when I got home from work (at a little girls tenth birthday party doing facepainting!) Family party went as follows: Takeout sushi, box of chocolates, silly birthday hat, magical rainbow my little pony cake. I ate sushi and hung out in the living room watching parking wars.

Boyfriend party: My boyfriend is so sweet and understands how important my birthday is to me. He took me into the city so I could go to all my favorite places, he took me out to eat some of my favorite food, he spent way too much money treating me and it was my best birthday in a while.
We ate sushi for lunch, and hot pot for dinner. We had bubble tea, went to the comic book shop, got beads at the bead store, cake in chinatown, and he drove the whole time so I didn't have to be stressed in traffic. He has earned a million boyfriends points boyfriends points retain no cash value.

Looking at these pictures again is making me hungry

I decided that while I was in Boston I wanted to get my face pierced. I wasn't sure if I wanted my lip done or a Monroe, but I decided on a lip stud and I think that was the best choice. So I shelled out about 100$ (for the jewelry, piercing, tip, and cleaning products. Happy birthday to me!) I was a little nervous.. but it didn't hurt nearly as much as I thought, and I didn't bleed at all. It didn't swell up much and is healing like a champ.

I TRIED to organize a super rollerblading party with all my friends but we are all adults with responsibilities and jobs so that didn't pan out. So instead we went to hot pot which a bunch of people were late for but that was ok since I like them and one of them brought me presents. And hot pot is delicious and no one can be mad when eating it's glory.

Thanks to everyone who celebrated with me or wished me a happy birthday! Lets do it again next year.

Going through more older art... As I am preparing to graduate, I am starting to work on my website, causing me to go through piles of older work to look for appropriate work to put up as-is, or to re-do. The following two images are not going on the new site, but i thought they were worth sharing.

This is a drawing I did that got turned into a digital painting (which I do not intend on posting, as it did not turn out well IMO) This is not the whole image and does not represent the intended composition, I unfortunately don't have the time to scan this drawing in pieces and put them together in photoshop (image is bigger than my scanner bed.) I do enjoy this image, and I will probably do some other work based on this image, be it a painting or something mixed media.

This is a quick little painting I did, alice in wonderland themed of course. I don't remember what prompted me to do this image, It wasn't for any type of project. It's acrylic paint on the cardboard backing of a paper pad that I coated with gesso.

(does the rabbit look like he has panties on?? I just now noticed this. How odd.)

In other news, I am still drowning in work, and rolling around on the floor with anxiety. I have also been debating as to whether or not I want to walk for my college graduation. I am thinking no, I don't really find it all that exciting to wait in line forever to accept a degree. I'm not sure how my family would feel about this... I would only have my immediate family there at the event anyways, so I'm not sure its worth the time, the stress and the money. Plus my birthday is around the same time, and I'd rather be spending my time planning for that. I do plan on sending out graduation notice letters to family/friends/people who helped me along the way.

so... who knows. I still have a little time to decide. Maybe I am still in denial about graduating, I feel like I haven't learned enough yet!

Watercolor times! sea shells

A couple of paintings done for my watercolor class!

Along with full assignments, we have to also paint a sea shell that was provided to us each week.

Even thought its a really basic technique that I've known since middle school, I love the beautiful patterns that kosher salt makes on watercolor paintings. My teacher really liked this one, and said that I should make a set of shell paintings like this, and that I could sell those to a card company.

The shell I chose is really different than the other ones that were chosen by the rest of the students, this one had a beautiful pattern on it, and is small and round. The others are large with lots of sharp edges that cause dramatic shadows. My teacher has commended me for choosing a shell that's so hard to paint, but I've enjoyed the challenge of trying to paint the pattern so that it looks like its a part of the shell. (I don't think I've achieved this just yet, but maybe by the end of the class I will)This clearly is not a shell, but I had so much fun doing the rainbow shell painting I decided to do another one while it dried. A piece of sushi was a easy and simple shape to render quickly. Also I was probably craving sushi at the time...

I'm incredibly busy right now... I've been working tons (I was just at a kids birthday party face painting) and there is a lot of school work piling up, I am trying to make a website for my artwork, I am busy preparing crafts to sell at a convention, and I am trying to get some artwork done as a gift for a comedian that I am going to see in a couple weeks! Not to mention that my anniversary is also right around the same time, along with my mother's birthday, mothers day, then the month after is my birthday, and graduation, and then I am going to fly to visit my uncle down south!
So that has been interfering with my illustration Friday works... I have actually been half-finishing most of them, but I never make it in time. Hopefully when things quiet down I will have some more time and be able to squeak a couple out now and then.

I am going to try my best to keep this blog updated! I might post up a few tutorials I have lurking around in my head. Any maybe some pictures of all the work I'm doing if any of it comes out decently.

CAT RACKHAM by Steve Wolfhard is the best comic you should be viewing with your eyes if you are not already viewing it. I love it and it's amazing and so I decided to make the character out of clay because he is adorable.

I decided to take the idea of the sketchbook drawing from the previous post (thanks to brenton for the idea!) because I realized it clearly fit the theme (Layers)

Super old sketch for an Alice and wonderland project in a Black and white class in college. I did do a finished piece but I have no idea where that went. I want to redo this in color, because I actually really like this sketch for some reason.

Illustration Friday theme: Surrender
A little sexual, May not be quite safe for work

Done in watercolor and micron pens for the outlines.

There is a strange shadow because I do not have a working scanner (and have not for a while, which you could probably tell from the recent previous posts) and have just been taking these with my digital camera. These pictures are a pretty accurate representation of the artwork, just with some shadow.

(note to self: Save up to buy a new scanner! And also a printer, as they both broke together)

I finished out my moleskine sketchbook! It's actually my first one, I didn't normally buy them because they were so expensive, but the hardcover sketchbook they have is the perfect sketchbook to fit in my purse. The paper is nice and thick and the cover keeps the pages from getting mashed to death among my things. I finished my first one some months ago, so here are some drawings from it!

My family actually owns chickens (we don't have a farm... my parents just thought it would be fun to have some chickens so now there is a little coop in the yard) and this is a "portrait" of one of them. He actually was killed when a fox broke in to the coop a year or two ago, poor fellow.

I made a clay pendant for my boss as a Christmas gift. I have a great boss, and had a hell of a time trying to buy something for her, so I decided to make her a clay pendant, and bought her a little journal to go along with it.

Not yet attached to a chain in these pictures... I also added hanging beads to the little loop sicking out at the bottom there.

Spring is here! I base this not on the calender but on the fact that I saw flowers for the first time today. So I decided to go walk in the woods, and I took my camera along with me.

I need to post regularly! I actually spent a long time not even using the internet except for email and an occasional search. It had a lot to do with being busy, and having a computer that was so slow from 4 years of junk. But it's been wiped clean, and I am ready for action once again.

polymer clay LEDs

I had fun trying to replicate LED lights, and a LED board. It's all made out of different colored polymer clay, with only a few pieces of jewelry wire as the prongs on the individual LED lights. The board is an actual replica of a board I saw online. I have no idea how it actually works, or what it does, since I've only ever soldered a board once in my life (very successfully though)

Sometimes I do art. I'm pretty scatterbrained in what I like to do... I work on a bunch of different things at the same time, in different mediums, switching madly between them when I feel like it. Pictured here is a embroidered jelly fish, because I felt like trying to embroider something (next time I'll do something more complicated)

And here is a picture that's been in my head quietly lurking, that I did in a couple of hours. Ink wash and graphite pencils. Strange proportions on purpose... although I don't think I exaggerated them quite right.

sushi book- finished

I posted the progress of a little sushi book i was making, and I finished it promptly after I had posted, but forgot to post more pictures. So here we are!

it's a simple, silly little book, like a shrine to my love of sushi. I enjoyed the process of making it, and it was done relatively quickly making it a satisfying rather than frustrating project, which is what I feel when working on detailed and deeply conceptual works.

A stab at a business card design... I am certainly not a designer, but I gave it my best shot, seeing as I will have to make some actual good professional designs once I graduate. So why not practice now? And I thought it would be nice to have something to give out to the awesome artists I meet, so we can keep in contact (which is nicer than... tearing off a piece of paper and writing down an email that will get lost in an hour)

The text on the bottom bothers me... and the larger words are a little too close to the edge (which I fixed before I sent for some prints of this) but otherwise I'm not too displeased with myself, which is quite a step up considering how harshly I judge my work.

Comments and suggestions welcome (as always) especially from anyone with good design experience!

I hope everyone had a good holiday season, I have been quite busy but managed to find a little time to relax in between. Today especially! I set out a couple of day old biscutts and some sunflower seeds, and Sat quietly by the window with my camera waiting for some hungry birds.

Photographing these birds was difficult, as they quickly flew in, grabbed seeds and then flew back high up in the trees for safe eating. They know we have a cat lurking around somewhere, but I was wise enough to keep the feather -lusty beast inside today.

Sorry for the slowness in post activity... college has me up to my eyes in work to be done, leaving me with little time to update here!

As mentioned before... I made a accordion-fold book with different sushi and patterned backgrounds. Ink with colored pencils. More pictures later of the rest of the pages, and the cover.

Hawaii photos, round two

Sorry for the lack of posts for a few weeks, was in the process of packing up and moving back in to the city, which was very stressful and time-consuming. But I am finally settled in and mostly de-stressed.

For this round of photos, I'm going to post up some of the beautiful sea life of hawaii. I did a lot of snorkeling on the trip, as Hawaii has some very beautiful clear waters. However the cheap underwater cameras managed to only take cloudy pictures that didn't represent the beauty of the ocean. Luckily however, we stopped at the Maui aquarium.

So you may have noticed the lack of updates for a week or two, and that is because I was in Hawaii for two weeks! But now I am back, with a tan and lots of beautiful pictures! A beautiful flower near a waterfall in Maui. Called a "Torch Ginger" They have large 5 foot stems

Wild rooster! There were lots of wild chickens and roosters on the island... Apparently they got loose and just thrived. Called a "Jungle fowl cock" these animals really have no predators, not even people, as they are apparently very tough and not of a good quality for eating.

This is a adolescent version of the "common myna" bird... these guys were everywhere... trying to swindle food out of tourists, and squawking loudly. This little guy didn't seem to know much better and so I got pretty close to him as he stared inquisitively at me. So cute

There were lots of wild cats on the islands too! this little fella was just sitting out in a state park... mewing loudly, looking for the rest of his clan. He didn't run away from me, but he wouldn't let me get close to him.

The smallest little lizard I saw at a botanical garden. There are lots of little geckos all over the islands, and seeing them in considered good luck. This is a very zoomed in photo, the little guy was about the size of my whole thumb!

A Mongoose! I was out eating lunch next to this little waterfall, and a couple of these guys were scurrying around in the grasses nearby. I managed to coax him out with a bit of bread off of my sandwich, and snagged a couple of photos of him. I first thought these guys were some sort of wild ferret, but I was incorrect.

The birds on the islands were very cute, they had these great patterns on them. This is the "spotted dove" and was quite common on both islands I stayed on.

Thats all for now, but I will have some more photos later of some of the beautiful scenery, and then normal posting will return.
